Stevenson presents Jekyll as desperate by using language that makes him appear ghostly “there … Sat Dr Jekyll , looking deadly sick”. What he done there is was a adverb – desperation , made it sound as if he’s really sick.

This emphasises the strangeness of Jekyll’s behaviour because Utterson  is a reasonable man. The repeated harsh sound in his language sshow just how taken aback he is by his friends attitude.

Stevenson presents Jekyll as desperate by describing his reaction “he was cold”. Stevenson used this to say had that harsh sound in his language to show how Utterson it’s reacting to dr Jekyll’s attitude.

Stevenson presents Jekyll as desperate by using repetition “Utterson, I swear to god,” cried the doctor, ” I swear to god I will never set eyes on him again”. Jekyll is making a promise to mr Utterson that Dr Jekyll will never see mr Hyde again. Stevenson uses this to show that Dr Jekyll will never see mr Hyde again.

Also Stevenson uses alliteration by saying ” he did not like his friends feverish Manner”.

Stephenson uses metaphor to present Hyde as cruel by using the character that get hurt and saying he done it and he over exaggerates it. For example for example by using Stephenson compares Hyde to this suggests that Hyde is a bad man for example “hailing down a storm of blows ” and ” a great flame of anger”

Stephenson uses adverbs to show that mr Hyde is a violent. 

The chapter opens with a description of a maid looking out of a foggy window and she sees man getting killed with a heavy cane.

Utterson is called to the scene of the crime because he went to investigate the scene.
