The chapter opens with a description of a maid looking out of a foggy window and she sees man getting killed with a heavy cane.

Utterson is called to the scene of the crime because he went to investigate the scene.

Dr Jekyll hosts a party. Everybody leaves apart from Utterson Jekyll and Utterson are pleased to have the chance to speak. Utterson brings up his concerns with Jekyll’s will. Jekyll promises Utterson that Hyde is in his life by choice and he can be rid of him he chooses. Just to put your good heart at rest, I will tell one thing: the moment I choose, I can be rid of mr Hyde. He doesn’t mean he can kill mr Hyde.
